The Limousin |
So you have decided that France is for you, a place have that much needed holiday home, to retire to, relocate to or just simply start a new life in and have a new adventure. So why the Limousin or any of its surrounding departments (we also cover the Vienne in Poitiou Charente and Indre in the Centre region) here in the Centre of France. To start with some simple reasons:
- Beautiful and diverse countryside.
- A rural area allowing you to return to community values and a slower pace of life.
- 1 per cent of the population ever affected by crime and that'll be minor.
- Lakes, rivers and gorges dot the landscape.
- Getting out and about, cycling, rambling, bird-watching, fishing and water sports on hand.
- Easy access by road, train, air, and bike.
- Just a 6 hour drive from the ports and serviced by low cost airlines to Limoges, Poitiers and Tours.
- Space, and so much of it, both in our properties and outside them.
- Lively villages and towns in easy driving distance of one another.
- Markets and locally produced goods including the wonderful Limousin beef.
- Reasonably priced property.
"This stunningly beautiful region of still lakes, fast flowing streams, gentle rolling valleys and forested mountains has been one of the best kept secrets in France. From the lovely old city of Limoges to the tiny hamlets scattered across the hills and forests, and the pure rivers and lakes, discover the friendliness and old world charm of one of the last remaining havens of the "real France" "(Extract from Go Limousin as linked to below)
But what can you expect from the region, what does it offer for you, your friends and your family?
If you are looking for sun, sea and sand and 24 hour hustle and bustle then the Limousin is not for you. You need to love nature and appreciate the simple things in life. Here the community lives from the land and they move with the seasons in a special kind of way.
In the winter, when it is cold and yes it can be, with bright blue skies and crisp days, the emphasis is on indoor pursuits or winter sports and getting off to the nearby Auvernge for a spot of skiing at the weekend. The Alps are around 5 hours drive away.
Spring brings warm sometimes hot temperatures and longer days when the planting and preparing begins and nature wakes up. Plenty of festivals and celebrations at this time of year with the various sporting seasons getting underway too.
Spring is followed by those long, hot, lazy summers spent enjoying the lakes and the tourists spots around; the gorges of Crozant, lakes of Eguzon, St Pardoux and Vassiviere, to name but a few. Plenty of châteaux too visit with the Loire Valley within striking distance too. History is in every small village but you need to look for it. The Limousin is not ostentatious and doesn't shout about its hidden gems.
Then into Autumn, my favourite time of year, when the countryside turns to shades of brown, auburn and orange and takes your breath away at every turn and the foraging and preparations for the winter start. Mushrooms and chestnuts go to the top of the list for wonderful Autumn recipes.
We could go on forever, but if this has whet your appetite then take the time to come and visit to discover this diverse pocket of France for yourself. Pop in and see us while you're here. You're always welcome!
